Shaving tool removes traction patterns quickly
A hand-operated skiving or shaving tool offered by Flexco allows quicker, easier and safer removal of conveyor belt 'rough-top' or other raised surface traction patterns in preparation for mechanical belt splicing. Removal of raised material allows belt fasteners to be installed firmly on a flattened top-cover base for a stronger, lower-profile, more durable splice. Offered as part of the company's broad line of mechanical fastener installation tools, the Rough-Top Belt Skiver (RTBS) is a channel-blade device with a round-end wood handle that fits the palm for easy, comfortable operation.
Unlike other hand skivers, the channel-blade design uses the flat bottom segment of a U-shaped, hardened-steel channel trimmed at an acute angle to form its cutting edge.
It is easily resharpened by stroking across a flat honing stone or emery paper.
The vertical sides of the channel extend forward as surface guides that automatically position the blade to shave the belt flat without gouging.
The guides also serve as blade shields to promote safer handling.
Equally effective on molded rubber, synthetics or leather belting, the skiver also can be used to bevel belt edges, or to remove flashing from other items molded of similar materials.
For best results, the RTBS Hand Skiver is held at an approximate 30-degree angle to the surface of the belt, and simply pushed through the rough top pattern.
Trimmed material comes off in one continuous piece, eliminating the airborne debris and dust that can result from using powered grinders.
