Prestigious safety award goes to SLC maker of baggage handling systems

When the recession hit, The Horsley Co. did not cut corners on safety at the Salt Lake City plant where it makes intricate baggage-handling systems for airports, including the Delta Airlines' and international terminals at Salt Lake City International Airport.

Instead, the company increased its safety budget and set its sights on receiving SHARP (Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program) certification from the Utah Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Utah OSHA), a status earned by only four other Utah firms. It is only one of 2,000 U.S. firms, out of almost 7 million nationwide, to achieve SHARP status.

Formal recognition of that achievement was marked Tuesday in a ceremony at the company's plant, 1630 S. 4800 West. Employees and invited government dignitaries celebrated the award presentation with a luncheon in a spanking-clean warehouse studded with multilevel storage shelves holding heavy-duty conveyor belt sections or all the parts that go into them.

One broad aisle between two parallel shelves contained, neatly stacked on pallets, an array of electrical panels that can be programmed to operate a fully assembled baggage-handling system to fit an airport's specific needs. Another aisle was packed with sections of conveyor belt waiting to be shipped to Jackson Hole airport, individual sections marked with letter codes showing whether they were to be installed near the ticket counter, the baggage carousel or hidden from public view in the expansive area between check in and take off.

"Many companies made huge cuts to maintain market share and continue in business. For some, safety was an easy place to make short-term cuts," said Michael O'Connor, The Horsley Co.'s vice president. But perceiving that approach as "short-sighted," his company contacted Utah's OSHA division for assistance and in just six months, developed policies and implemented practices that met seven standards set up by the Utah Labor Commission agency.

"You made our job very easy," said safety and health consultant James Johnston, noting the agency rarely is invited in at the ground level to help build a safe workplace.

Johnston and colleague Kirk March oversaw the certification effort organized by The Horsley Co.'s Tenille Whitten and Jannette Rodriguez, safety manager of Five Star Airport Alliance. The alliance is a five-company coalition, including The Horsley Co., that is the only American group that can provide all of the services and equipment needed to move baggage at airports and cruise ship ports.

"The safety culture was always here," Johnston added, applauding the company's 60 employees for embracing the safety measures. "You spend a lot of time here. You look after each other."

Companies where co-workers care for one another invariably are successful, Utah Labor Commissioner Sherrie Hayashi said. "The best benefit is you know you have a company that stands behind you... wants you to go home safely each and every night."

Paul Shaffer, The Horsley Co.'s chief financial officer, said policies governing fork lift operation and the proper storage of equipment on shelving, and others recognizing the inherent dangers of using welding equipment and power tools, enabled his company to achieve the designation.

By adjusting operating parameters to avoid loads and adhering to more rigorous inspections, conveyor downtime from wood screw failures becomes avoidable

BY ROTATING AND MOVING along the bottom of a pile of wood material that is often more than 80 ft high, screw conveyors transport such products as woodchips, bark, and sawdust through a pulp and paper mill. The component of this conveying system that physically moves the material is the wood screw, a large spiraling mechanism also known as a sawdust, bark, or Wennberg screwAlthough a simple system, screw conveyors have the potential to shut down portions of the mill when screw breaks occur under an inaccessible portion of the pile. However, by monitoring certain operating parameters that influence loads placed on the screw, as well as implementing certain preventive maintenance activities, a mill can reduce the number of failures and minimize unscheduled downtime.

BASIC WOOD SCREW DESIGN. The screw portion of the conveyor has an overall nominal length of 35 ft-45 ft and is made up of five basic parts as shown in Figure 1. Each of these parts is subject to failure and presents a different maintenance challenge.

Barrel. The barrel portion of the wood screw conveyor is typically made of pipe material manufactured according to the ASME specification SAl 06, Grade C Schedule 120 pipe.

If the barrel portion breaks, lead times for obtaining new screws can range from three to five months, because sections of pipe over 35 ft long are difficult to obtain from suppliers.Also, in most mills, welding varying lengths of pipe together to make the barrel is considered unacceptableFlights and digger teeth. Having the appearance of screw threads on a screw, flights are made of bent flat plate material that is welded to the barrel in a helical pattern. Digger teeth, which are small pieces of metal welded to the outer edges of the flights, are sometimes added to the screw to help break up compacted material along its length.

Digger teeth enhance the performance of the screw by digging into the pile, but, since their failures have only a minor impact on the overall operations of the screw, they are considered expendable. However, failure of the flights can reduce system capacity, resulting in damage to the barrel. Damaged flights must be removed from the barrel, then replaced with new ones.This means that the screw is taken out of service for one to three weeks, depending on the extent of damage.

Drive shaft. The drive shaft is a center traversing pipe which drives the screw. It is physically located inside the barrel and extends from one end to the other.

The drive shaft is protected by the barrel, but can be damaged when the barrel fails.Although the pipe material is not difficult to obtain, replacing it means the screw must be taken apart.

End shafts, end heads, and bearings. Located at the ends of the screw, these components allow independent rotational and lateral movement of the screw. The components are not difficult to obtain or fabricate, but replacing them means downtime as the screw is taken apart for repair.

Wear resistant coverings. Wear resistant coverings are placed on the flights and the barrel to extend the screw's life by reducing material loss from erosion. These coverings are hand-applied coatings, wear-resistant plate material, or alloy material (stainless steel, inconel, etc.) welded to the surfaces of the barrel or flights.

Wear-resistant coverings are intended to wear away under normal operating conditions. However, they should be replaced on a regularly scheduled basis since they are easier to replace than the barrel or the flights.

SURFACE CRACKING CAUSES. Most screws fail near the center of the screw or slightly offcenter toward the drive end.

These types of failures are usually load related and are the result of cracking that starts at some type of surface discontinuity such as a dent, ding, irregular weld contour, weld start or stop, or a material microstructure of martensite at the toe of the flight-to-barrel weld.These surface discontinuities act as stress risers, amplifying the effects of loads on the screw.When trying to prevent screw failures, examining the load conditions that initiate surface cracking is just as important as examining the parts affected by the loads.

Imposed Loads. The two major types of applied loads on the screw result in forces that bend or twist it.These forces are perpendicular loads (bending loads) and parallel (twisting loads) applied to the screw axis. The forces that are applied perpendicular to the screw axis are the result of the pile weight acting vertically downward, of the horizontal force on the screw as it is pushed against a compacted or frozen portion in the pile, or of a vertically upward force on the screw as it rides over material between the flights and the floor during startup. These forces tend to bend or bow the screw near the center of its length or at a location under the portion of the pile with the greatest material height.

Three new drive modules (a connecting drive, a transmission drive and dual drive) and six new chain types have also been added to the product line. The new types of chains have been specially designed for the food and packaging sectors. The chain line-up now encompasses 8 types: standard, cleated, steel top, universal, friction top, 20 mm roller cleat, 35 mm roller cleat and low back pressure chain. Products can be conveyed up 15[degrees] inclined slopes without the use of cleats by using the new cohesive friction chains. Universal chain is intended for the easy attachment of any customer-specific chain top and features an additional groove in the chain for torsion protection.

Finally, two new mounting brackets enhance layout flexibility and vastly simplify the assembly and installation of even complex multi-level alpine systems. One of the new brackets also makes it possible to suspend VarioFlow from the ceiling to let users maximize productivity at every level in their plants.

Now you've got a trading system all coded and you know that your entry is producing better than a random entry into the market. Excellent.

If you haven't already tested it on as much market data as you have available, now is the time to do so. That last thing you want is a trading system that works great on the EUR/USD, but fails to trade the GBP/USD. Something isn't right there. That system is going to blow up sooner or later. A robust system will trade all actively trading currencies with a profit.

After you've tested it on all kinds of data and it's working well, the most important test comes next. The walk forward test. Set up a demo account and have the system demo trade the market live for at least two weeks.

How did it work? Did it mess anything up?

Review the trades and perform any maintenance on the system. N.B. I'm NOT talking about optimizing the system at this point. I'm talking about technical failures in the code itself. These will show up. Better to have them show up on a live forward walk test that a live account with real money!

Now for one of the most important questions of all, even though this system worked, will it fail in the future? Trading systems do that. You don't want that to happen to you.

I'm going to tell you a dirty little secret that you can use to make sure your system is good. It involves work. You decide if it's worth it. Trade the system on futures and stocks. If it holds it's own on the other markets, I guarantee you that you have a winner.

How Stress Affects The Immune System
